In many societies, elderly people often live in retirement homes. This is not appropriate because families should always care for their aging members. Attitudes toward the elderly are different from society to society. In societies which emphasize the importance of family, elderly people are considered the responsibility of the family, who take care of the elderly relatives when hey can no longer care for themselves. In societies which focus on independence and the family is not seen as a unifying force, the older family members live in retirement homes, apart and sometimes hundreds of miles away from their family. In my opinion, a system in which family members take care of their older members is much better for the family and its older members because of cost, the importance it places on elderly members of society, and for reasons relating to quality of life.
