Analysis of “Rain” by W. Somerset Maugham

A boat has temporarily stranded on Pago Pago due to measles. The major characters: a doctor and his wife traveling with a missionary and wife, and S. Thompson who is a prostitute. They are forced to share a place of lodging with a woman who lost her reputation and that sets the stage of the story. Sadie spends her time partying and drinking with the American soldiers stationed on the island. Mr. Davidson wants to save her soul because everyone in the house is disappointed with her behavior.
