Mega Events as a Tourism product

The aim of this essay is to get a broader scope of mega-event as a tourism product and to clarify the impact left after one of the biggest mega events – the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The essay starts with a justification of mega events in general, contextual information about the chosen event and the destination which have hosted that event. Therefore, 3 P’s method is used in order to be able to analyze the impact left after the event. In total, six impacts both, positive and negative is given for each of 3 P’s (People, Planet, Profit). Moreover, the explanation of Butler’s lifecycle model is given and applied to South Africa together with the validation of current South Africa’s stage, according to Butler’s lifecycle model. After all, two social dilemmas are given as well as personal opinion on future tourism in South Africa.
