Setting in the walking dead

This term paper aims to discuss and analyze the setting in the series The Walking Dead. The second section of this term paper discusses the post-apocalyptic setting. Firstly, the post-apocalyptic genre is defined to get a better understanding of the subject. Later the post-apocalypse in urban setting is analyzed. The setting in post-apocalyptic cities and towns sets the desperate and hopeless mood affecting characters as much as the viewers. The third section discusses that spaces are divided into safe and unsafe, each with certain functions. In the first part of the third section, setting in narratology quoting the particular authors is described. The second part of the third section analyses the outside spaces as danger. The danger in the Walking Dead is portrayed as undead creatures, zombies. Both, urban and natural outside spaces are portrayed as dangerous and filled with what might look as simple crowds of people, but camera work and particular shots reveal that the crowds consist of zombies. In the third part of the third section inside spaces as shelter are discussed. Other functions of the inside spaces like providing shelter, food, medicine, and giving opportunity to find other living beings are also discussed. What is more, the phenomena of characters domesticating the setting to be as similar as home is present. Author illustrates the particular setting using screen shots from the series The Walking Dead and uses quotations to support the facts. 10 different episodes of seasons from 1 to 4 were taken for the analysis of the setting in the Walking Dead. At the end of the paper the main points are concluded and presented.
